Rebekah Durston
Rebekah
Durston began playing the violin at the age of six. At the age of nine she
joined The Guildhall School of Music and Drama junior department and studied
with Faith Whiteley, formerly of the Menuhin School. She won a music scholarship
to Charterhouse for sixth form and went on to read music at the University of
York. In her first year she won the Scarborough college recital prize and also
performed the Mendelssohn violin concerto with the University orchestra.
She joined the Yorkshire Baroque Soloists and sang regularly with the Yorkshire
Bach Choir.
In 1998 she graduated and won a Leverhulme Scholarship to study violin with
Catherine Makintosh at the Royal College of Music; Rebekah won the Century Music
prize and graduated with distinction.
Professional Development
Rebekah became known as one of the youngest leading baroque violinists in
London. She toured all over Europe and made many recordings with The King's
Consort, The Parley of Instruments, The London Handel Orchestra and the
Gabrielli Consort and players.
Current Situation
In July 2001 Rebekah moved to Northern Ireland and has established herself as
one of Northern Ireland’s leading violin teachers. Many of her students are
prize winners at regional music festivals and two recently reached the finals of
the Young Musician of the Year for Primary Schools.
